Hello!

We are a group of your 4 ordinary 19-year olds with a not-so-ordinary kind of energy and mission in mind. Filled with a zesty passion and enthusiasm to create positive change within our society, plagued by the frightening 'OhDearMe8MonthsBeforeUniStarts' fear of inactivity after our A levels, we decided to participate in the Citibank-YMCA Youth For Causes. We seek to raise $20 000 as well as public awareness for
Beyond Social Services
from May to August 2010 through a variety of means. Beyond Social Services is a non-profit, multi-racial, secular organisation which strives to curb delinquency among disadvantaged young people and their families and to move them beyond their problems.

Youth volunteerism is a huge part of our project - my friends, you play an extremely important role in the meeting of our project goals. Our organising team has expanded to include current JC students from our alma mater, HCI (College). In addition to having a fun-filled carnival+concert and sale of button badges to raise funds, we formed Ohana, a 6-month long volunteer programme recruiting to aid Beyond in their LIFE (Learning Is Fun and Exciting) Programme for underprivileged primary school students.

Do show us your fullest support throughout the various aspects of our project for a good cause! (: To learn more about them and ways you can help/volunteer in Project Cactus, simply click on the links at the side or email any queries to
projectcactus2010@gmail.com. Check out our Facebook Page to join our group and receive fresh and constant updates on the happenings of our exicting, wildly meaningful project and upcoming events! (:

What are you waiting for? (: Hope to see you at our our awesome fun-filled fund-raiser event COME HOME! 2010, which is a 2-in-1 outdoor event consisting of a charity concert preceded by the carnival 'WHERE IT ALL MAT-TERS' of games, food, fashion and fun, all laid out on mats! Happening only on the 15th of June at Fort Canning Park, 1830 to 2130 (: Hurry grab your tickets!

Ohana!

Photobucket

Ohana!, under Project Cactus, is a 6-months long Volunteer Programme collaboration with the BSS’s ‘LIFE (Learning is Fun and Exciting)’ Programme.

The project name, ‘Ohana’, means ‘family’ in Hawaiian. It is the hope and aim of the Team Ohana! that the children grow to see the volunteers as their ‘Ohana, individuals whom they can trust, rely on and seek help from. (:

Through Ohana!, we aim to recruit and mobilize youth volunteers to empower underprivileged school children and youths who require close supervision and guidance in their academics. It seeks to rebuild students’ confidence and enthusiasm for learning and attending school regularly through the tuition in English, Mathematics and Science. In addition, the youth volunteers set out to provide the students with an enriching curriculum through coaching sessions, nurturing talents and passion in the areas of Art and Craft, Vocal training and Music and Dance. Through the tuition and coaching sessions, volunteers seek to instill moral values such as resilience and responsibility in the students.

Youth volunteers from ages 15 to 25 will be recruited from various schools and the public split into teams, with each team assigned to each of the 8 BSS Family Centres.

As an Ohana! volunteer, you will be volunteering weekly for about 6 months, facilitating the progress of the LIFE! lessons alongside the BSS teachers.

Do you like to work with children? Do you yearn to bring smiles of joy and indescribable warmth to the kids and youth at BSS, at the same, gaining immense satisfaction with the intangible seeds of love you’ve sown into the childrens’ lives? Not forgetting, do you wish to know others who share the same kind-hearted interests as you do?

If you’re keen on becoming an Ohana! volunteer, do drop us an email at projectcactus2010@gmail.com with the subject header ‘Ohana Volunteer’ providing us with your name, age and contact details. As recruitment for volunteers is an on-going process, we will definitely contact you shortly for further arrangements! (:

Awaiting to hear from you!

Throughout 2008, The Preamble worked on writing more originals. In early 2009, they began performing at gigs and their first public show was at F.A.D studio. Subsequently, the drummer, Stephen, got hold of more gigs and after having worked on their 5th song, they performed at Cineleisure. 4. Marlon Ingle

A student at Lasalle, the college of the arts, Marlon has been into music since his early teen years. Picking up the guitar at the tender age of 13, he subsequently started playing the ukulele, harmonica and keyboard as he delved deeper into music. Writing all the songs he can and recording them in his humble bedroom, Marlon is slowly moving into the studio to get his works finally recorded properly.

Ever since he enrolled in Lasalle, studied Music Technology, he started experimenting with electronic sounds. He fuses an acoustic vibe with electronic elements and also integrates jazz chords into pop rock music, bringing something a little different to the table, so don't expect mediocre 4-chord pop songs.

In and out of a number of bands, he has decided to just take it easy and do his own thing.

5. HWACHONG MAD Hip Hop

More than just a CCA at school, MAD Hip Hop is a group consisting of dance enthusiasts practicing various street dance forms including hip hop, popping and waacking. Under the guidance of various instructors and previous generations of members, MAD Hip Hop has grown from it’s beginnings and has participated in various performances and competitions, such as Tapestry, Inspire, Danceworks and of course, HwaChong Dance Night. Now, keep your eyes open, as MAD Hip Hop 2010 brings you another performance that will definitely make you want to move your feet to the music too!

7. Trella

Formed in early 2007, Trella has been building a reputation with the local kids by playing numerous shows around the country to promote their music, despite each member having to devote most of his time to work or school.

Come 2010, the young rock quintet fervently pushes forward with more than just live shows in mind. A new voice and whole new attitude fuels their latest effort, "The Silver Lining" EP.

Picking up right where their last release, "Orion" (2008) left off, "The Silver Lining" marks a new era for the band and its listeners. Recorded in June to November 2009 with producer Roland Lim who also helmed the board for 2008's "Orion," the new EP takes you on a journey through the band's existence. Featuring songs both old and new, "The Silver Lining" gives the audience a sonic perspective of the development of the band and its music over time.

8. For This Cycle

At only 17 years old, singer/songwriter Weiwen Seah has already established his place in Singapore's local music scene. Armed with his sincere vocals and acoustic guitar, Weiwen has captivated the hearts of many with his melodic "soul-pop" tunes. Performing under the moniker "For This Cycle", Weiwen's music proves to have no barriers, garnering support in countries from Finland to the Philippines. Best described as "having ice cream at the beach on a Friday night with your friends", Weiwen's unique blend of acoustic-guitar driven pop-rock is said to be way beyond his years.

In June 2008, Weiwen began working with local indie label Big Ear Musica and highly renowned producer Roland Lim on debut EP. Featuring crowd favourites such as Paper Feet, Oceans, and For What It's Worth, Weiwen released his 5-song EP to a sold out audience on the 11th of July featuring collaborations with Ex- Electrico Guitarist Daniel Sassoon and Ex-Rafe drummer Jordan Cheng.

Weiwen also appeared on Channel 5's "Live 'N' Loaded" series, where he was named the "Best Breakthrough Act" of the season and was also invited to play at Singapore's prestigious Baybeats festival 2009, alongside international acts such as Anberlin(USA), Fountains of Wayne's Chris Collingwood(USA), and Love Me Butch(MSIA).
